Description
Our Map Reading Skills lesson plan is used to expand on the knowledge students may already have about maps. It includes a summary of the different types of maps, their usefulness, and other characteristics of maps, and of course how to read the maps and their features. During this lesson, students are asked to work with a partner to create a map of the United States that is used for a specific purpose, either chosen by them or assigned by a teacher, including a list of questions that someone should be able to answer if looking at that map; they then swap maps and questions with another group and answer the questions for the other group’s map, demonstrating their ability to interpret a map. Students are also asked to identify the type of map that is being used or will be needed based on a given statement.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify different types of maps, obtain skills to effectively read a map, and list some features of all maps.
