CAREERS: SPACE FORCE LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Introduction to the US Space Force

The Careers: Space Force lesson plan contains two content pages. It’s good to begin planning what you need to do now to be successful in the future. It is never too early, even when you’re just a kid, to think about what you want to do later in life. You will need to learn special skills and be good at certain things to join the Space Force. That’s why you should learn about the career now to see if you’re interested!

Have you ever seen people using advanced technology to keep an eye on space? If you have, you have a good idea of what the Space Force does. The US Space Force is a branch of the military that focuses on space operations. They protect satellites, carry out space missions, and ensure the safety of space technology. Without NASA and space exploration, we wouldn’t have GPS, satellite communications, and national security systems. These services are essential for our everyday life and for keeping us safe. The US Space Force will protect these valuable assets from foreign governments that want to harm the United States.

The US Space Force was established in December of 2019 and is the newest branch of the US Armed Forces. Since then, it has grown a lot. It was created to protect US interests in space and ensure the US has a place in space. As space becomes more critical for national security and daily life, the need for professionals in the Space Force is expected to grow even more.

The Space Force is necessary because we now rely more on space-based systems. For example, the Space Force monitors weather satellites to help us predict the weather. They also protect communication satellites that let us make phone calls, watch TV, and use the internet. As more space missions occur, we need more trained Space Force personnel. This creates more job opportunities for people interested in this exciting and growing field.

Space Force Guardians

A typical day in the Space Force is both exciting and diverse. You might start the day with physical exercise to stay fit, like when you play sports at school. After that, you could attend a briefing about the latest updates in space missions. Then you might look at satellite images on large computer screens to make sure they are functioning correctly. You might sometimes participate in drills, practice repairing a satellite, or handle a space threat. Plus, you would work alongside scientists and engineers to develop new space tools, like more powerful rockets or durable satellites.

Members of the Space Force are called guardians, reflecting their role in protecting space and supporting space operations. Guardians work full-time, spending months in training and on missions. They often work with scientists, engineers, and other experts to conduct space operations, monitor space assets, and conduct research. If you enjoy variety and exploring the unknown, being a guardian would be out of this world!

The Space Force offers a good salary. Salaries vary depending on the person’s role and experience, but most guardians make around or above $77,000. With more experience and a higher rank in the military, guardians can make over $100,000.

Education and Training

To join the Space Force, the first requirement is a high school diploma. If you are an elementary, middle, or high school student, you will want to learn a lot of science and math. STEM programs are excellent ways to learn the skills you need! And thinking about a career in the military should also be part of your long-term plan. Still, many roles need advanced engineering, physical science, or computer science degrees. The more education and experience you have, the more opportunities you’ll find in the Space Force.

The Space Force helps us understand and protect space. Guardians go on essential missions, create new technology, and inspire people worldwide. Working in the Space Force is exciting and offers a chance to be a part of exploring space while doing something you love. It is also a way to serve the community and nation by being part of the United States’ newest military branch!

CAREERS: SPACE FORCE LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Careers: Space Force lesson plan includes two worksheets: an activity worksheet and a practice worksheet. Each one will help students solidify their grasp of the material they learned throughout the lesson. You can refer to the classroom procedure guidelines to know when to hand out each worksheet.

SAVE THE EGGNAUT ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity, students will design and build a landing vessel for en egg. The worksheet lists the “rules” to follow and a couple questions to answer once they finish the task.

REVIEW PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet requires students to answer a series of 10 questions. These questions all relate to the content pages, so students will need to refer to them often for the answers. In addition, each question provides which reading tool the question corresponds to, such as text feature, vocabulary, or comprehension.

Worksheet Answer Keys

At the end of the lesson plan document is an answer key for the practice worksheet. The correct answers are all in red to make it easier for you to compare them with students’ responses. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
