Lesson Objectives and Overview: Battle of Little Bighorn explores the events surrounding this significant battle in Native American history. Students will discover what caused the battle and what happened as a result. They will also learn about significant individuals of the time. This lesson is for students in 5th grade and 6th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
The “Options for Lesson” section of the classroom procedure page outlines some additional activities and variations that you can use when presenting this lesson to your students. Students may work alone or in pairs for the activity. Have them create a map of the Battle of Bighorn location and identify towns, place names, etc. Another activity is to have students make a poster that advertises an upcoming movie called “The Battle of Little Bighorn.” Ask a history expert to come to the class and speak with the students about Native Americans and the Battle of Bighorn. Have students do further research regarding the Great Sioux War and other battles during that time in history. As one more research project, students could learn about modern landmarks in the region related to the Battle of Little Bighorn.
Teacher Notes
The paragraph on this page provides a little more information or guidance on what to expect from the lesson. It emphasizes the importance that students understand the impact of this battle on Native American relations with the American settlers. You can use the blank lines to record any thoughts or ideas you have as you prepare.

The Battle of Little Bighorn lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment.
