This lesson introduces students to the underlying principle of a democratic society – that citizens have both rights and responsibilities. Through engaging activities and exercises, students will learn about the concepts of rights and responsibilities, and how they play out in a community setting. They will also have an opportunity to practice differentiating between the two. By the end of the lesson, students will have a good understanding of what it means to be a citizen in a constitutional democracy, and the role they can play in making their community, nation, and world a better place.

Description

Civic Ideals and Practices is a lesson that introduces students to the essential principles of democracy. In a constitutional democracy, citizens have both rights and responsibilities. This lesson provides students with an opportunity to explore the concepts and to participate in a community-based activity.

Through this lesson, students will gain an understanding of democratic ideals and practices. They will learn to explain the difference between rights and responsibilities in a democratic society. And they will see that citizens have a role to play in their community, nation, and world through civic participation (voting, activism, volunteering, etc.).

The students will practice differentiating between rights and civic responsibilities. This is an important skill for them to develop, as they will need to make informed decisions about the issues that affect their lives.
