Overview: The Life Sciences Learning Roadmap Gr1-2 lesson guide introduces students to concepts and material that explore these unique fields of science. Students will study a number of varying subjects that align with NGSS standards. In total, the Life Sciences guide includes 33 lessons.
Learn Bright learning roadmaps are useful tools for organizing your teaching agenda, whether in the classroom or at home. The science roadmaps are divided into general subject areas: earth and space, engineering and technology, life sciences, and physical science. This roadmap includes the lessons for the 1-2 grade band in life sciences. It lists the lessons in alphabetical order, and you will find the grade band associated with the lesson below the lesson title. Note that some lessons fall into more than one subject area or grade band.
Teaching Schedule
Because there is no national standard for teaching science-related topics, you can choose any number of these lessons to teach your students throughout the years. Many lessons relate well to each other, and you may benefit from teaching multiple lessons at the same time. For instance, the Life Sciences Learning Roadmap Gr1-2 lesson guide includes separate lessons for forests, deserts, and habitats. You could teach them all in conjunction with each other. The same is true for topics related to animals, plants, and more. Feel free to be flexible and adjust when necessary to fit your unique needs!
Life Sciences Learning Roadmap Gr1-2 lesson guide
The learning roadmap for the life sciences subjects includes 33 lesson plans for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade. The topics vary from recycling to the five senses to coral reefs to the concepts of inheriting traits and heredity. The state educational standards for every lesson, which align with NGSS standards, are on the individual lesson product pages. Below is a short list of lessons from this roadmap. Each lesson contains a brief description that explains what students will learn.
Life Sciences Lessons
- Butterflies—Our Butterflies lesson plan introduces students to these special bugs. Students will learn a little about metamorphosis and the life cycle phases that butterflies go through. They will also discover and be able to describe the six different parts of this insect. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.
- How Plants Grow—Students will learn all about the process by which a plant grows healthy and strong. They will discover which components—water, sunlight, soil, air—are necessary for a plant to survive and grow as it should. They will also discover that there are other factors that also affect a plant’s growth. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.
- Five Senses—This lesson teaches students about the functions of each of the five main senses of the human body. Students will learn facts about sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. They will also discover how they work and how they sometimes affect each other. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.
