Lesson Objectives and Overview: All about Oceans STEM 2 teaches students a little more about the characteristics of the ocean. Students will build on the knowledge they gained from our All about Oceans STEM lesson plan. They will have the opportunity to engage in more activities that reinforce their knowledge. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. For this lesson, you will need to provide blue food coloring drops, blue markers, salt, and water.
Options for Lesson
There is one suggestion in the “Options for Lesson” section of the classroom procedure page that you could incorporate into the lesson if you wish. After you finish the lesson, or before you begin, you could take advantage of online activities. Have students visit the Project WET website at discoverwater.org and complete various activities and games online. These games will help reinforce certain lesson concepts, such as the scarcity of water sources or just how much water covers Earth.

The All about Oceans STEM 2 lesson plan has one content page. This page provides some very basic characteristics of oceans. Students will first learn that water is a necessity of life. Nearly three-quarters of the Earth is covered in water. Nearly all the water on Earth comes from the oceans around the world. However, ocean water is salt water. Because of this, it is not drinkable.
An ocean is an ecosystem. Of all the ecosystems in the world, the ocean has been explored the least. It is incredibly deep. Only recently have people been able to explore the depths. In fact, the greatest depth of the ocean is 36,198 feet deep! Lots of different life forms make the ocean their home. Scientists believe there are around a million species of animals in the ocean.
The lesson explains that almost 95% of oceanic animal species are invertebrates, meaning that they have no backbone. There are also huge animals like great white sharks, manta rays, dolphins, and sunfish. On the smaller side, there are many kinds of microscopic animals, too. They are only visible with the help of a microscope, such as zooplankton.

SALTWATER OBSERVATION ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity requires students to investigate the differences between two glasses of water. One glass will contain clean water with no additives while the other contains salt. The chart on the worksheet lists three questions for students to respond to regarding what they observe. Then they will respond to the prompts at the bottom of the page.
ALL ABOUT OCEANS STEM 2 PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will color a map and list the oceans. They will answer the prompt asking them how many oceans are on Earth. There is a box at the bottom of the page in which they can write down the five oceans.
CREATE YOUR OWN LIFE FORM HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Students will create their own ocean animal or plant. In the big box, they will draw a picture of the life form they create. At the bottom of the page are three small boxes. Students must write out three characteristics or traits that the animal or plant has that helps it survive in the ocean. They will also need to an explanation for each trait.

There are answer keys for the practice and homework worksheets. Given the nature of the homework assignment, there are no actual answers provided. It reminds you to ensure students’ responses make sense and show comprehension of the content.
