What our lesson guides include
Overview: The Math Learning Roadmap Grade 5 expands students’ comprehension of fractions, decimals, measurement, and more. Students will discover more about comparing and converting decimals and fractions. They will also learn more about percentages and start studying ratios and proportions. This year will also introduce students to the order of operations in more detail. In addition, students will also study more complex geometry and measurement concepts.
Learn Bright learning roadmaps are useful tools for organizing your teaching agenda, whether in the classroom or at home. The roadmaps schedule suggested lessons for each subject by grade level. The roadmaps divide the lessons into four quarters, each of which further divides into three periods of three to four weeks. Each period contains a number of lesson plans to teach that focus on even more specific areas within the subject.
You will be able to incorporate every period’s lessons from each subject’s grade-level roadmap. During the first three weeks, for instance, you will deliver the lesson plans in the first column of each subject. Roadmaps are meant to make it easy for you to follow a schedule from which to teach throughout the year. Some roadmaps contain additional lesson plans that you might choose to use if you have extra time or want extra practice. You do not have to follow them exactly. Feel free to be flexible and adjust when necessary to fit your unique needs!
Math Learning Roadmap Grade 5
The grade 5 roadmap for math contains a combination of review material and novel concepts that students have not learned yet. For instance, students will review fractions and decimals, but they will learn about percentages and ratios as well. This year’s curriculum will focus a lot more on decimals than the previous year’s.
Quarter 1
The first quarter reviews ideas students learned in grade 4. Students will reinforce concepts related to decimals, basic statistics, graphing, and expressions. Some lessons from this quarter are Decimals Expanded Form, Find Missing Exponent or Base, and Operations with Multi-Digit Decimals.
Quarter 2
For the second quarter, students will review fractions. Lesson from this quarter include Fractions – Add and Subtract Unlike Denominators, Fractions and Rectangles, and Interpret Division of a Unit Fraction.
Quarter 3
Similar to the second quarter, students will continue studying fractions in the third quarter. However, they will also learn more about percentages and ratios and proportions. Lessons include Word Problems – Fractional Answers, Line Plots and Fractions, and Ratio and Rate Reasoning. There are also several lessons in the section for additional review or practice specifically for percentages. You can use these lessons if you want to devote extra time toward percentages to prepare for grade 6.
Quarter 4
The final quarter spotlights algebraic expressions, measurement, and geometry concepts. Students will learn more about volume and metric measurement, graphs, and angles. Lessons include Variables in Math, Volume Measurement Concepts, and Surface Area – Advanced Lesson. There are also lessons in the additional review and practice section that relate to cubic measurements and units to prepare for grade 6.
There is an extra page on this roadmap that contains several extra lesson plans. You can use these plans throughout the year as you have extra time or see the need for extra practice.
