Context and Word Recognition

$1.95

Our Context and Word Recognition lesson plan teaches students about the value of and strategies for using context clues for word recognition. Students practice using the methods taught in this lesson to correct and inform their understanding of unfamiliar words.

Description

Our Context and Word Recognition lesson plan introduces students to the value of and strategies for using context clues for word recognition. The lesson begins with some suggestions other than context to help students determine the meaning of a word, such as sounding it out and thinking about whether it sounds like another word they know. Then the lesson provides examples of how to use context clues to discover the meaning of an unfamiliar word. During this lesson, students are asked to use their creativity and work with a partner to create meanings for made-up words and write sentences using the word; another pair of students will then guess its meaning using context clues. Students are also asked to work on their own to determine the meaning of various words from the context, demonstrating their ability to use the lesson material to determine the meaning of words.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
