Description
Our Understanding an Equal Sign lesson plan teaches students to understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if two sides of an equation are the same value using addition and subtraction. Students will learn that the equal sign is a symbol that means both sides are the same. Students are asked to write both true and false equations using equal signs in order to demonstrate that they understand the difference. Students are also asked to complete an interactive and collaborative activity in which two students take turn rolling dice to try to make true equations; if the number they roll does not make a true equation, it’s the other student’s turn.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if two sides of an equation are the same value using addition and subtraction.
