Description
What our Surface Area Advanced lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Surface Area Advanced teaches students how to find the surface area of several objects. The lesson focuses only on rectangular prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones. By the end, students will know exactly how to figure out the surface area of any of these figures.
There are only two pages of lesson content, but each page provides detailed instruction. Students will first learn what surface area (SA) means in relation to three-dimensional objects. Then they will learn about each of the four figures. First, they will talk define prisms and what classifies as prism. Then they will move on to pyramids. This lesson will focus on pyramids with a square base.
Next, students will learn about cylinders, and last, they will discuss cones. Each section provides the equation to find the SA of the corresponding figure. Then it lists provides a break-down of how to solve the equation with the measurements on the figures.
ORDER THE CANS ACTIVITY
You will have to do some prep work for the activity worksheet. You will divide the students into groups and give each group six cans of varying sizes. Number the cans so that the students can sort them. Students will order the cans from smallest to largest based on their SA and write the order on the sheet. Then they will measure and find the SA of each can. Then they will order the cans again, and they may find that the new order differs from the first. Last, they will answer the question at the bottom of the page.
WRITE THE FORMULAS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet requires students to calculate the SA of eight total figures. There are two figures for each type of shape. Students will show their work in the space next to the figure.
SURFACE AREA ADVANCED HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework mimics the practice worksheet. Students will solve the SA of eight figures, two for each type of figure shape. They will show how they got their answers using the blank spaces next to the figures.
