In our Subtracting Multiples of 10 lesson plan, students learn methods to subtract multiples of ten from two-digit numbers. Students complete practice problems in order to solidify their understanding, using a hundreds chart if needed.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to provide students with laminated hundreds boards that they can use to practice solving problems with.

Description

What our Subtracting Multiples of 10 lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Subtracting Multiples of 10 offers students various strategies to subtract multiples of ten from any number. Several examples are provided to enhance students’ understanding. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to subtract multiples of 10 from various two-digit numbers. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are linker cubes, highlighters or markers, and the handouts. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the supplies and copy the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. An optional addition to this lesson is to provide students with laminated hundreds boards that they can use to practice solving problems with. You can also give them laminated pictures to practice with. If you have more advanced students, you can give them problems with three digit numbers and have them subtract multiples of 10. You could also allow students to use linker cubes to better visualize and understand subtracting by sets of 10.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

SUBTRACTING MULTIPLES OF 10 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Subtracting Multiples of 10

The Subtracting Multiples of 10 lesson plan includes three pages of content. The lesson begins with an example. Say you have 60 stuffed animal rabbits, and you give 20 of them away. When you take away 20 from 60, how many are left? The lesson includes a helpful illustration, where they have drawn 60 rabbits and crossed 20 out. Looking at this illustration, it is easy to determine how many are left by counting the rows of 10 rabbits. There are four rows of 10 left, so there are 40 rabbits left.

The lesson also shows you how to solve this problem using place value. 60 is six tens and zero ones. 20 is two tens and zero ones. Take two tens away from six tens and you have four tens left, or 40.

Another way to solve these problems is by using a hundreds chart. First, find the larger number (in this case, 60). You should move two spaces up (2 tens) to find the answer of 40. Hundreds charts are a fast and easy way to subtract multiples of 10, because you simply have to move up a row for each ten that needs to be subtracted. The lesson ends with several more examples to help students learn how to solve these problems.

SUBTRACTING MULTIPLES OF 10 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Subtracting Multiples of 10 lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

HOW MANY ON MY PLATE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, you should demonstrate how to solve the first problem so students understand how to fill in the worksheet. Students will complete their worksheet and bring it to you to be checked. If the first sheet is correct, you should give the student another sheet to complete with a different starting numbers. Students should use linker cubes or another manipulative of base 10 to complete the worksheets.

SOLVE THE PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will solve various subtraction problems using place value, numerically, and with a hundreds chart.

SUBTRACTING MULTIPLES OF 10 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to find the number using the provided clues and color it in on the hundreds chart displayed on the worksheet. They will follow clues like “the number that is 20 less than 97”.

QUIZ

This lesson includes a quiz to help test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will solve subtraction problems.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
