Lesson Objectives and Overview: Relate Addition and Multiplication introduces students to the concept of using repeated addition to demonstrate multiplication. The lesson provides several illustrated examples showing how to use this process to solve multiplication problems. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to relate addition and multiplication through the concept of repeated addition. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.
Classroom Procedure

The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are candies, cookies, and scissors. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the supplies and copy the handouts.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. If you’d like to add to the lesson activity, you can have your students create their own real world problems. If you have more advanced students, you can have them begin to work without a model and with larger numbers. An optional adjustment to this lesson is to let students keep using repeated addition until the feel comfortable using multiplication instead.

Relate Addition and Multiplication
The Relate Addition and Multiplication lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson begins by asking how multiplication and addition are alike. You can actually use repeated addition to show multiplication. In order to do this to find the total number of objects, all of the groups must be equal in size. Equal groups means that there are the same number of objects in each group. If this is true, we can then arrange the groups in an array.
The lesson includes an example of four groups of two apples. To find the total number of apples, you can add 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8. You can also multiply: 2 x 4 = 8. We can represent 2 x 4 as an array, with 4 as the number of rows and 2 as the number in each row. The lesson illustrates this.
The lesson then includes two more examples. In one example, you need 3 cups of flour per cake and you want to make 5 cakes. You can find the total number of cups of flour you’ll need using addition by adding 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15. You can also multiply 3 x 5 to get 15. The lesson includes one final example to solidify students’ understanding of these concepts.

The Relate Addition and Multiplication lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
COOKIE MATH ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For this activity, students need several circles and candies. The teacher will then write an addition or subtraction sentence on the board, and students will use their circles and candies to model the sentence. Students will then provide the missing addition or multiplication sentence.
PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will solve three problems. For each problem, they will draw a specific number of groups of a specific number (for example, “Draw 4 groups of 3”). They will then write the addition and multiplication sentences for each.
RELATE ADDITION AND MULTIPLICATION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to look at two models. For each model, they will write the related addition and multiplication sentences. Finally, they will write a word problem that can be solved using 6 x 3.
QUIZ
This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test your students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, they will circle the correct answer for two questions about how to represent repeated addition equations as multiplication problems.

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
