What our Place Value through Hundreds lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Place Value through Hundreds teaches students how to identify values up to the hundreds place. Students will learn to distinguish between numbers and digits. They will also be able to use a chart and base ten blocks. By the end of the lesson, they will be able to identify these place values easily. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. For this lesson, the supplies you will need are a large place value chart, base ten blocks, a hundreds chart, the worksheets, and pencils. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can assign partners, gather the supplies, and copy the worksheets.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. For this lesson, one of the suggestions is to have a hundreds chart available for any students who are struggling with the lesson. If you’re teaching more advanced students, you can also teach them the thousands place in conjunction with this lesson (and introduce them to the Base Ten thousands cube).

It notes that students are likely familiar with place value for ones and tens, but that this lesson teaches them about the hundreds as well. Place Value
The Place Value through Hundreds includes one content page. It first defines place value as the value that a digit (0-9) has based on its position in a number. The 5 in the number 215, for example, stands for five ones. We can use several different tools to represent place value. One of these tools is a place value chart. In these charts, each place value has its own spot. For the number 342, you would put the 3 in the hundreds place, the 4 in the tens place, and the 2 in the ones place. The lesson includes a place value chart, using this number as an example so that students can see what one of these charts looks like.
Next, students will learn that Base Ten Blocks are another tool that we can use to represent place value. Small blocks represents one, line-shaped blocks containing ten of the small squares represents ten, and large squares containing ten of the line-shaped blocks represents one hundred. The lesson includes drawings that represent each of these. In order to draw base ten blocks as a visual representation of place value, you can use dots as ones, lines as tens, and squares for hundreds. Examples of these are also shown.

The Place Value through Hundreds lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
MATH PARTNER ACTIVITY
Students will work with a partner for the activity. There are two problems for them to solve together. They will use both a place value chart and base ten blocks to show their answer.
BASE TEN BLOCKS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet has two sections. For the first part, students will review a picture of base ten blocks that represent a number. Then they will decide and write where each digit belongs in the given spaces. They will then answer the same questions for a new number, but that number will not have a picture to assist them. Finally, they will draw base ten blocks that represent another number.
PLACE VALUE THROUGH HUNDREDS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Similar to the practice worksheet, the homework assignment requires students to represent numbers using both base ten blocks and a chart. There are also three prompts that require them to write a number that contains a digit in a certain place.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
