Ordinal number worksheet

I cut the ordinal number words and figures out and had my second grade class put them back in order. It worked great and they enjoyed the activity. Note: The word eighth is misspelled.

Our Ordinal Numbers lesson plan prepares students to identify, use, and write the words for ordinal numbers. Students complete practice problems that include ordinal numbers and also learn related vocabulary.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to use ordinal numbers as a springboard to a writing lesson and have your students write a short story using some of the ordinal numbers.

Description

What our Ordinal Numbers lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Ordinal Numbers prepares students to identify, use, and write the words for ordinal numbers. This lesson includes experiential learning activities that engage young students in interaction to match assigned ordinal numbers with the corresponding words. Students build and reinforce vocabulary that will impact their reading comprehension and written expression. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify, use, and write the words for ordinal numbers. This lesson is for students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional adjustment to the lesson activity is to distribute both ordinal numbers/words to same student to piece together, working alone. You can use extra content from resources for more ordinal number practice. For the activity, you could also allow pairs of students to label objects on their own without teacher instructions. If you’d like, you can have your students complete the homework page in class. Finally, you could use ordinal numbers as a springboard to a writing lesson and have your students write a short story using some of the ordinal numbers.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ORDINAL NUMBERS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Ordinal Numbers

The Ordinal Numbers lesson plan includes two content pages. Did you know that there are three kinds of numbers? These are cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers, and nominal numbers.

Cardinal numbers are the numbers we use when counting (1, 2, 3, etc.). Nominal numbers are used to name or identify things. For example, the number on the back of someone’s soccer jersey is a nominal number. The zip code or house number in your address is also a nominal number

Ordinal numbers tell you the order of things. You can remember this because the words ordinal and order start with the same first three letters, ord. Some example of ordinal numbers include the numbers used in races, places in line, or on birthdays.

The most frequent ordinal numbers include 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th, but we can turn any number into an ordinal number. For example, a local store might celebrate their thousandth customer! On a calendar, the number 15 means it’s the 15th day of the month. Almost all of the words for ordinal numbers end in -th, with a few exceptions.

The lesson closes with a helpful ordinal number chart that lists the ordinal number in one column and the word form of each ordinal number in the other column.

ORDINAL NUMBERS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Ordinal Numbers lesson plan includes two worksheets: an activity worksheet and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

NUMBERS AND WORDS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will work with a partner to complete the lesson activity. Each pair will cut out the ordinal numbers and the ordinal numbers written in words on the worksheet. They will then use a piece of tap or glue to join the ordinal number and word together. Next, they will use their ordinal numbers to identify objects in the classroom that are first, second, third, and so on with their partner.

ORDINAL NUMBERS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will use ordinal numbers to answer 10 questions. They will also answer a bonus question.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes an answer key for the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
