Description
What our Order Fractions with Like Numerators lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Order Fractions with Like Numerators teaches students to put fractions in order from smallest to largest if the numerators are the same. The definitions of numerator and denominator are reviewed at the beginning of the lesson and several illustrated examples are given to enhance students’ understanding of the concept. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to place three fractions in ascending or descending order with like numerators. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade and 3rd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students create their own word problems for situations with their friends where they have like numerators. You could also have students color a fraction bar for each problem on the practice worksheet. If you have more advanced students, you could begin to discuss the idea of different denominators and numerators.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
ORDER FRACTIONS WITH LIKE NUMBERS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Order Fractions with Like Numerators
The Order Fractions with Like Numerators lesson plan includes two content pages. When putting numbers in order, you arrange them in either increasing or decreasing order. To put fractions with the same numerator in order, you have to look at the denominator. The larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. As the denominator gets bigger, the whole is divided into smaller pieces. The more pieces you have, the smaller each piece is!
This is easy to understand when you look at it visually. The lesson includes a helpful diagram that shows how 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5 compare to each other. 1/2 is bigger than 1/3, which is bigger than 1/4, and so on. When the numerator is the same, look at the denominator to decide which piece is larger and which is smaller.
Let’s look at an example. Say you wanted to put the fractions 1/6, 1/10, and 1/4 in order from least to greatest. The numerators are the same, so you need to look at the denominators. You can create a picture for help if you’d like. Remember that the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. Therefore, the answer is 1/10, 1/6, 1/4.
Let’s look at another example. Say you wanted to put the fractions 3/6, 3/10, and 3/4 in order from least to greatest. Like in the last example, the numerators are the same, so you need to look at the denominators. The answer is 3/10, 3/6, 3/4.
ORDER FRACTIONS WITH LIKE NUMERATORS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Order Fractions with Like Numerators lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
CUT AND COLOR ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to cut out the fraction bars on the worksheet, coloring them in if they wish!
LEAST TO GREATEST PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will first order fractions from least to greatest. They will then order fractions from greatest to least. Students should use their fraction bars as needed.
WORD PROBLEMS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to solve six word problems that include ordering fractions.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will solve a word problem and explain their reasoning using the lesson material.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
