Lesson Objectives and Overview: Odd and Even Numbers introduces the difference between odd and even numbers. The interactive activities that students are asked to complete sharpen number sense and provide students with the practical experience to identify and explain the difference between odd and even numbers. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and explain the difference between odd and even numbers. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. Both optional adjustments to this lesson relate to the lesson activity. First, you can use just one or two dice for the activity. Second, instead of using dice for the activity, you can create or use counters labeled from 1 to 100 and have your students choose them randomly.

Odd and Even Numbers
The Odd and Even Numbers lesson plan includes two content pages. Numbers are everywhere! Every day, we see telephone number, speed limits, prices, and more. Every number is either odd or even. Odd numbers cannot be evenly divided by two, while even numbers can be evenly divided by two.
Even numbers include 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8. Odd numbers include 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.
What is the difference between even and odd numbers?
Even numbers can be evenly divided by 2. The number 6 is an even number because we can divide it evenly by 2: 6/2 = 3. The lesson illustrates this by showing that you can split 6 birds into 3 groups of 2 with none left over. All even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. Some other even numbers include 12, 24, 36, 38, 70, 86, 34, 62, 58, and 30.
Odd numbers cannot be evenly divided by 2. The number 5 is an odd number because we cannot divide it evenly by 2. The lesson illustrates this by showing that you cannot split 5 eggs into 2 groups with none left over. When you divide by 2, there’s 1 left over. All odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. Some other odd numbers include 11, 23, 35, 37, 79, 85, 33, 61, 57, and 39.
You can skip count by 2 to find more odd or even numbers. To change an odd number to an even number or an even number to an odd number, you add 1. For example, 3 + 1 = 4 and 6 + 1 = 7.
Numbers are all around us, and all of them are either odd or even! Remember that even numbers will have nothing left over when you divide by 2, while odd numbers will have 1 left over.

The Odd and Even Numbers lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
DICE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
Students will work with a partner to complete the lesson activity. Each pair will roll one dice, two dice, and three dice, writing each number in the space provided on the worksheet. They will tell whether each number is odd or even. When rolling two or three dice, they will count or add to find the total, telling whether the sum is odd or even.
COLORING PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will look at a grid with different numbers on it and will shade the odd numbers one color and the even numbers another color.
ODD AND EVEN NUMBERS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to first circle whether each group of items shown on the worksheet add up to an odd or even number. They will then write five odd and five even numbers. They will also tell why the number 7 is an odd number and why the number 6 is an even number. Finally, they will change each even number to an odd number by adding 1 and change each odd number to an even number by adding 1.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
