Multiply Fractions by Whole Numbers
The Multiply Fractions by Whole Numbers lesson plan includes one content page. The lesson begins by explaining the four steps for multiplying a whole number by a fraction. The first step is to rewrite the whole number as a fraction. We can rewrite whole numbers as fractions by placing the whole number in the numerator and a 1 in the denominator (7 becomes 7/1, for example). The second step is to multiply the numerators straight across (multiplying the numerator of the first fraction by the numerator of the second fraction). The third step is to multiply the denominators straight across (multiplying the denominator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second fraction). Finally, the fourth step is to reduce the fraction as needed and change the improper fraction into a mixed number.
The lesson ends with two examples that demonstrate all four steps one by one. Students can use these examples as a guide as they begin solving practice problems.

The activity worksheet asks students to roll dice to find a whole number and draw a domino to create a fraction. They will then multiply the two numbers together, setting their problems up like the blank example shown on the worksheet. They must show their work and circle their answers.

For the practice worksheet, students will solve 15 practice multiplication problems.
