Description
What our Money Word Problems lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Money Word Problems teaches students how to solve word problems that involve dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Students will discover how important it is to be able to count money. Money is, after all, something they will deal with nearly every day. They will learn the values for quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies and how to show those values in decimal form. By the end of the lesson, they will be able to solve simple money problems easily. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students go online and find toys or games that they want to buy, restrict the budget to a specific limit; you can then have them add the amounts of their goods and figure out whether or not they fall within the budget. You can also have students pull coins out of a bag and add the amount.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
MONEY WORD PROBLEMS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Money Word Problems
The Money Word Problems lesson plan includes two content pages. We use money almost every day! You or your parents may have bought something at a store recently and used money to pay for it.
We use both coins and bills for our money. Each of these coins and bills are worth a different amount. The lesson shows pictures of a quarter, a dime, a nickel, and a penny and lists the value of each. Quarters are worth 25¢, dimes are worth 10¢, nickels are worth 5¢, and pennies are worth 1¢.
Say you go to a store and want to buy a pack of gum, which costs 90¢. You have 3 quarters and 2 dimes. Do you have enough money to buy the gum? To figure this out, you need to find the sum of the coins. Three quarters is 25¢ + 25¢ + 25¢ which equals 75¢. Two dimes is 10¢ + 10¢ which is equal to 20¢. We add these together (75¢ + 20¢) and see that you have a total of 95¢. Therefore, you do have enough money for the pack of gum!
Your friend found four pennies and two nickels in his sock drawer. How much money does he have? 1¢ + 1¢ + 1¢ + 1¢ + 5¢ + 5¢ = 14¢, so he has 14¢.
Another friend helped her mom clean out their car and found 3 dimes, 2 pennies, and 1 dollar bill. How much money did she find? 10¢ + 10¢ + 10¢ +1¢ + 1¢ + $1.00 = $1.32, so she found $1.32.
Your brother found some toys at the store. He wants to buy a Hello Kitty sticker, which costs 20¢, and a Spiderman ring, which costs 35¢. How much money does he need to buy them? 20¢ + 35¢ = 55¢, so he needs 55¢.
Knowing how to add different amounts of money is helpful for your everyday life. The more you practice, the better you’ll be!
MONEY WORD PROBLEMS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Money Word Problems lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
FOLLOW THE PROMPT ACTIVITY
You will need to gather empty food boxes and cans and write different prices on them. For the activity worksheet, students will answer the questions on the page using the empty containers. They can work individually or in pairs.
SOLVE THE PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will work through six different word problems. Each problem will ask if the person has enough money to buy something. Students will circle either yes or no and then write the amount the person has. They will have space in each box to show their work.
COMPARE THE FRUIT HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment lists four fruits with a certain value beneath each picture. Students will answer questions based on the values of the fruit. There are eight total questions for them to answer. Some of the question will require them to work through the problem. There is space at the bottom to use if they need it.
MONEY WORD PROBLEMS QUIZ
The quiz is a short assessment that involves a few questions related to a specific amount of money. The lesson displays a number of different coins with their values. Students will add them together and then figure out the answer to the questions.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
