Math Signs: Advanced

$1.95

With our Math Signs lesson, students will learn to identify math signs and apply them in numerical statements.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have your students make a poster of each sign to display with the symbol and the words in the classroom.

Description

What our Math Signs: Advanced lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Math Signs teaches students about all kinds of mathematical concepts. By the end of the lesson, students will understand how to use math signs in the real world. This lesson is for students in 1st grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson include colored pencils or markers, scissors, and popsicle sticks.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. To expand this lesson, you can teach it in conjunction with other math lessons, helping solidify the concepts for students. One optional addition to the lesson is to have your students make a poster of each sign to display with the symbol and the words in the classroom. You can also use flashcards for students to practice identifying the greater than and less than symbols.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

MATH SIGNS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Math Signs

The Math Signs lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson opens with some common road signs and asks students what information they tell you. Like these signs, math signs tell us what to do or give us information.

The equal sign (=) tells us that two things are the same. For example, 12 = 12 and 5 – 1 = 4.

The addition sign (+) tells us to add a number to another number. The result is called the sum. For example, 6 + 1 = 7. 7 is the sum.

The subtraction sign (-) tells us to take a number away from another number. The result is called the difference. For example, 6 – 1 = 5. 5 is the difference.

The greater than sign (>) tells us that one number or value is larger than another number or value. For example, 7 > 2 and 5 + 3 > 7.

The less than sign (<) tells us that one number or value is smaller than another number or value. For example, 1 < 9 and 3 + 4 < 9.

Next, the lesson lists a few equations and asks students to draw a picture to represent each. For example, for the equation 1 + 3 = 4, they might draw 1 smiley face + 3 smiley faces = 4 smiley faces.

MATH SIGNS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Math Signs lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

CUT OUT ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will first cut out the math symbols on the worksheet. Next, they will look at math equations and place the sign that makes each statement true.

POPSICLE STICKS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to color and cut out each sign on the worksheet. They will then glue a popsicle stick on the back of each.

MATH SIGNS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will draw the sign that corresponds to each name (addition, greater than, subtraction, etc.). They will also write an example of each sign using numbers in an equation.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes an answer key for the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
