Options for Lesson

One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have students use a graphic organizer to create as many facts as they can for a specific number. If you have more advanced students, you can have them start to decompose numbers into smaller parts. You could also have your students create a sum using three or more numbers. Finally, you can have students use pictures to represent the different facts for their number.

Make a Number with Addition
The Make a Number with Addition lesson plan includes two pages of content. The lesson begins by stating that you can make a number using addition in many different ways. The lesson uses the number 6 as an example. To make the number 6, you can add 5 + 1, 2 +4, or 3 +3. The lesson illustrates this using the example of pigs at a state competition. One farmer brings pink pigs, and the other brings red. One farmer can bring 5 red pigs, and the other can bring 1 pink pig, for a total of 6. The lesson shows every possible combination of pigs. There are five ways add numbers together to make a sum of 6. When you look at these combinations as addition sentences, you can see a pattern. Once you understand the pattern, you can use it to help you make numbers with addition!

ADDING CUBES ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will use cubes to make numbers using addition. They will use two different color cubes. The teacher will begin by demonstrating the activity. They will write a number on the board and ask students to use cubes to show all the different ways they can make that numbers. The teacher will then show students how to write the problem onto an index card using a number sentence. They will also draw a picture of their cubes underneath the number sentence. Students are also given a list of five different numbers to complete and write on separate index cards.
COLOR THE BLOCKS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to color in the blocks using two different colors to show different ways to make specific numbers using addition.
MAKE A NUMBER WITH ADDITION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will use the given numbers to fill in the boxes correctly. For example, students are given the numbers 1, 2, 7, and 8, and need to show how to make 9. They will write 1 and 8 in the first two boxes, since 1 + 8 = 9, and 2 and 7 in the second set of boxes, because 2 + 7 = 9 as well.
QUIZ
This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will draw lines to match the pictures with the correct numbers.
