I 3/4 like it!

These resources are awesome. This assignment may have been a little above the kids head. Fractions are challenging for most.

Description

What our Intro to Fractions: Halves, Thirds and Fourths: Advanced lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Intro to Fractions: Halves, Thirds and Fourths introduces students to fractions through the lens of sharing with their friends. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain the concept of equal parts. This lesson is for students in 1st grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson include glue or tape, colored rectangles, and scissors.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson is to draw shapes outside with chalk and have your students cut the shape into halves, thirds, or fourths. For an additional visual aid, you can print out picture of items and have students cut the shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. You can also provide your students with some shapes or items that can not be partitioned into halves, thirds, or fourths. For an additional activity, you could have your students use measuring cups to pour water into a cup that represents half or a fourth. Finally, try using measuring cups to show your students that not only shapes and items can be divided, but liquids too!

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

INTRO TO FRACTIONS: HALVES, THIRDS AND FOURTHS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Halves

The Intro to Fractions: Halves, Thirds and Fourths lesson plan includes three content pages. Say you made a sandwich to share with a friend. How could you cut it into two pieces? You could cut one corner off for your friend and keep the rest for yourself. But is that fair? No! Instead, you could cut the sandwich in half. Halves are when something is divided into two equal parts. We can cut shapes in half, just like we can cut sandwiches in half!

Thirds

Next, say you made another sandwich to share with your two brothers. How could you cut it into three pieces? You could cut one small piece off for one of your brothers and keep the rest for yourself. But is that fair? No! Instead, you could cut the sandwich into three equal pieces. Thirds are when something is divided into three equal parts. We can cut shapes into thirds, just like we can cut sandwiches into thirds!

Fourths

Finally, say you made another sandwich to share with your three friends at a party. How could you cut it into four pieces? You could cut one small piece off for one of your friends and keep the rest for yourself. But is that fair? No! Instead, you could cut the sandwich into four equal pieces. Fourths are when something is divided into four equal parts. We can cut shapes into fourths, just like we can cut sandwiches into fourths!

INTRO TO FRACTIONS: HALVES, THIRDS AND FOURTHS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Intro to Fractions: Halves, Thirds and Fourths lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

INTRO TO FRACTIONS: HALVES, THIRDS AND FOURTHS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to take three rectangles from their teacher and divide them into four parts in three different ways. They will then describe what smaller shapes they made for each.

CUT AND GLUE PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will cut out the shapes printed on the worksheet and glue them into the table on the worksheet.

SHAPES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to cross out the shapes that are not divided in half. They will also answer a question about how they know the shapes are not divided in half.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
