Our Geometric Shapes teaches students about some common geometry shapes. Students learn to pay attention to the number of sides a shape has in order to identify it and practice drawing and classifying shapes.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional adjustments to the practice worksheet is to use actual objects in your classroom or outside instead of the images on the worksheet.

Description

What our Geometric Shapes lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Geometric Shapes expands students knowledge of geometry shapes. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish between defining and non-defining attributes, as well as draw shapes based on these attributes. Students will be able to classify shapes into categories. Students will also be able to create halves, thirds, and fourths of equal proportions to shapes and create composite shapes. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson include scissors, glue/paste, construction paper, colored pencils/markers/crayons, and the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional adjustment to the practice worksheet is to use actual objects in your classroom or outside instead of the images on the worksheet. You could also include this activity as additional practice for students to recognize the shapes in their surroundings. If you’d like add to the closing of the lesson, you can have your students write their responses to the questions “What is your favorite shape? If you were turned into one of the shapes, which one would you want to be and why?” on paper or ask them to write a creative story with a shape being the main character.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

GEOMETRIC SHAPES LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Geometric Shapes

The Geometric Shapes lesson plan includes three pages of content. As you look around, you’ll see many different shapes. Some of these shapes have straight lines, like the ones you see on books and computers. Your friend’s head or a lightbulb, on the other hand, are rounded shapes. All around you are geometric shapes that have connecting points and lines.

Some shapes are two-dimensional (2D). They are flat figures, like the shapes you draw on a piece of paper.. They have a length and a width. Other shapes are three-dimensional (3D). These shapes have a length and a width, but they also have a height. Everything around you is 3D. You can measure the length, width, and height of the objects around you.

The basic 2D geometric shapes include squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, circles, triangles, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. The basic 3D geometric shapes include cubes, cylinders, cones, spheres/balls, pyramids, rectangular prisms/cuboids, and triangular prisms.

We often combine different geometric shapes to create things like buildings, furniture, and other objects. Ice cream cones, for example, consist of two shapes: a cone and a sphere. When you take a test or answer questions, you might have to place a checkmark in a box that is square-shaped, or a circle.

If you’ve had soda out of a can, you drank out of a cylinder, a shape that’s round at the top and bottom and straight on the sides. The pipes in your house that carry water are also cylinders.

Outside of Washington, D.C., there’s a building that we call the Pentagon. It’s in the shape of a pentagon! It has five sides. In Egypt, there are structures called the pyramids that are pyramid-shaped. Many cities have many different buildings that are all different kinds of shapes.

Try looking around you when you’re walking around or riding on your bike. You’ll see many different shapes in many different sizes. Some of these shapes have straight sides and some have curved lines. Shapes are everywhere!

GEOMETRIC SHAPES LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Geometric Shapes lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

COLOR AND MATCH ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to first color in each of the geometric shapes and their names on the worksheet. They will then cut out both the shapes and the names. Finally, they will match each shape with its name and glue them next to each other on their construction paper.

IDENTIFYING SHAPES PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will identify the 2D and 3D shapes in each picture on the worksheet.

GEOMETRIC SHAPES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to answer ten questions about shapes. They will then look at nine pictures and identify the shape shown in each picture.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
