Description
What our Fractions on a Number Line 2 lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Fractions on a Number Line 2 teaches students how to draw a number line and identify where a mixed number or improper fraction is located on that number line. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. If you’d like to add an additional activity to the lesson, you can tape off a several different number lines, give your students a card, and have them find the place on the number line where their fraction is located; they can also create their own taped number lines and make up questions and answers for fractions. You may also want to walk through the creation of number lines as a review for any of your students that may not remember how to make them. Finally, if you have more advanced students, you can use mixed numbers and improper fractions that are more difficult throughout the lesson.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE 2 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Fractions on a Number Line 2
The Fractions on a Number Line 2 lesson plan includes two pages of content. First, it’s a good idea to review fractions. Fractions contain two part, the numerator and the denominator. The denominator tells you how many parts there are in total. The numerator tells you how many parts of that whole you have.
We can show fractions in three ways. First, we can show them algebraically by separating the numerator and denominator with a dash (–) or a slash (/).
Second, we can show them through a diagram. When creating your diagram, the denominator is the total number of objects and the numerator is the number of the objects to shade in.
Third, we can show them on a number line. The denominator determines how many sections you need on the number line. The numerator is the specific point on the number line where the fraction is.
We can write a fraction from a number line using two easy steps. First, find the total number of units between the whole numbers. This is the denominator. Second, count the number of spaces from zero. This is the numerator. It’s that simple!
The lesson shows a number line with a green dot on it. To find the fraction that this green dot represents, first count the units between 0 and 1. In this case, there are 4, so 4 is the denominator. Next, look at where the green dot is located. It’s on the sixth mark, so the numerator is 6. The fraction is 6/4, or 1 2/4. When reduced, the final answer is 1 1/2.
The lesson closes with a few more examples that show how to find the fraction that’s marked on a number line.
FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE 2 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Fractions on a Number Line 2 lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
FAMILY PORTRAIT ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will draw a portrait of their family, including their pets. They will then write three true statements about their family using fractions and will draw a number line to represent each statement.
X MARKS THE SPOT PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to draw and mark an X on each number line to represent the fraction printed next to it.
FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will fill in the table on the worksheet. They choose the numerator for each fraction, rewrite it, create a diagram, and then draw a number line showing their fraction.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will look at a number line marked with A, B, and C and write the correct fraction for each letter.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
