Description
What our End of Year Math Assessment – Grade 1 includes
Objective and Overview: The End of Year Math Assessment – Grade 1 evaluation tests students in grade-level math areas to determine their baseline knowledge. Each assessment involves a quick pre-test, an activity, and a post-test. The pre-test analyzes students’ knowledge in some (but not all) of the skills that they should learn during this year. The activity will provide some instruction on the areas they explored during the pre-test. The post-test provides another score to compare to that of the pre-test so you can determine students’ grasp of the concepts. At the end of the assessment, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic mathematic calculations for children leaving first grade.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this assessment. This page also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the assessment should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
PRE-ASSESSMENT
For the pre-assessment, students will solve ten problems to test their understanding of the basic mathematical skills for children leaving first grade. You can use this as a benchmark to understand which skills students have and which they struggle with.
FLOAT A BOAT ACTIVITY
The activity asks students to work in groups to use straws and tape to create a boat that will float. They can use 15 straws, tape, and a pair of scissors to create their boat, and can only cut their straws in half or in fourths. Their objective is to create the boat that can hold the most pennies before sinking. After creating and testing their boat, the students will answer six questions about the activity. They will also write two addition and two subtraction facts that equal the number of pennies their boat could hold.
POST-ASSESSMENT
For the post-assessment, students will solve ten problems to test their understanding of the basic mathematical skills for children leaving first grade. This assessment tests the same skills as the pre-assessment.
Answer Keys
This assessment includes answer keys for the pre-assessment and post-assessment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
