Lesson Objectives and Overview: Differences in Length lesson plan teaches students how to measure objects and how to compare the lengths of two different objects. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to measure objects to determine how much longer one object is versus another. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade.

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to provide students with a box of items or copies of items for them to measure and then write sentences about the difference in their measurement. It might also be useful for your to discuss how to use a tape measure for items that may be longer than 12 inches. Finally, if you have students who are more advanced, they may enjoy learning how to measure longer objects with a partner.

Differences in Length
The Differences in Length lesson plan includes three content pages. To find the difference in length between two objects, you first need to measure each of them using the same unit. This lesson uses inches, but you can also measure in feet, yards, centimeters, and more as long as you use the same units for both objects. You can’t find the differences using two different units.
To measure objects in inches, you will use a ruler. Start by lining the first object up carefully at the end of the ruler. If you don’t line it up correctly, your measurement won’t be accurate. Then repeat with the second object! Once you’ve measured both objects, you can find the difference in length. To do this, you will need to subtract the measurement of the shorter object from the longer one.
The lesson includes a few helpful examples. In the first example, two people want to compare their heights. One is 48 inches tall and the other is 50 inches tall. How do we find the difference in their heights? First, we need to identify the tallest object. In this case, the person who is 50 inches tall is the taller object, because 50 is greater than 48. Next, we subtract the shorter object to find the answer: 50 – 48 = 2. Therefore, we can say that the person who is 50 inches tall is taller than the other person by 2 inches, and the person who is 48 inches tall is 2 inches shorter than the other person.
The lesson closes with two more examples that students can review to help solidify their understanding of the lesson material.

The Differences in Length lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
GUMMY WORMS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will use a ruler to measure their gummy worm to the nearest inch. They will then stretch it out as far as they can without breaking it and measure again. They will then write two sentences comparing the difference in length of their gummy worms.
MEASURING PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to measure sets pictures in inches. They will write down the length of each picture in the set, find the difference in length between the two pictures, and write a sentence comparing them.
DIFFERENCES IN LENGTH HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will first measure five objects with a ruler. They will then write three sentences comparing two of the measurements.
