Lesson Objectives and Overview: Choose/Write Word Names for Numbers introduces students to the numbers zero through one hundred in word form and also instructs students in how to turn the word name of a number into a traditional numeral. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to choose and write word names for numbers up through the ten-thousands. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.

Options for Lesson

If you have more advanced students, you can have them draw six, seven, or higher numbers and then write the name of each. You could also challenge your students to learn the different names of numbers such as a google or a quadrillion. Finally, you could have your students make a list of where they might see written numbers in the job that they would want.

Choose/Write Word Names for Numbers
The Choose/Write Word Names for Numbers lesson plan includes one content page. It’s important to know how to read numbers written as words, because we do it every day! This skill is important when buying something or talking with someone. The lesson includes a helpful table that shows the numeric forms of numbers and their word forms from 0 to 99. It also includes 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, and 1,000,000, along with some additional tips for writing numbers in word form.
When you see the number 400, for example, you know that it has three place values, meaning it’s in the hundreds place. Because there’s a 4 in the hundreds place, we know that the number is four hundred.
If you see the words seventeen thousand, you know that seventeen, written in numeric form, is 17, and that thousand means it has three zeros. Therefore, the number is 17,000.
It can be more complicated with more complex numbers. For example, if you see the words forty-two thousand nine hundred and eighty-seven, you would need to write 42 for the thousands, 9 for the hundreds, and 87 for the tens and ones. Put it all together, and the number is 42,987.
It’s very helpful to learn to use place value and memorize the names of numbers!

DRAW A NUMBER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will draw numbers and write the name for each.
NAMES AND NUMBERS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to complete two exercises. For the first, they will look at names (numbers in word form) and write the number. For the second, they will look at numbers and write the names (numbers in word form).
CHOOSE/WRITE WORD NAMES FOR NUMBERS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will pick a number in each range (1-50, 2,000-4,000, etc.) and write the word name for each.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will match five numbers to their name.

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
