Lesson Objectives and Overview: Applying Volume in the Real World teaches students teaches students how to use volume measurements in real-world situations. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to find the volume of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths and then applying these skills to real-world scenarios. This lesson is for students in 6th grade.

One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students create their own 3D rectangular prisms using examples from nets and then find the volume of those rectangular prisms; they can then exchange them with a friend to find the volume of other rectangular prisms in the classroom. You could also challenge your students to build different rectangular prisms to fit into a specific volume.

Applying Volume in the Real World
The Applying Volume in the Real World lesson plan includes one content page. You can find the volume of a right rectangular prism using the formula V = l*w*h. However, you might run into a situation where the lengths of the sides are not whole numbers. If you come across a rectangular prism with fractions for their side lengths, you have two options.
One option is to change all of the fractions to improper fractions. The other is to change all of the fractions to decimals. Next, you will multiply and then reduce (if necessary) to find the volume.
The lesson includes two example word problems, one of which includes a diagram. In the first example, there’s an eraser company who wants to create a box for their erasers. They know the dimensions of the rectangular prism (shown on the diagram in the lesson). To find the volume of the box, you need to either change the fractions to improper fractions or change them to decimals and then multiply them together and reduce. In the first example, they change them to improper fractions. In the second example, they change them to decimals.

WORD PROBLEMS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to solve two word problems where they need to find the volume of rectangular prisms using the method that they learned during the lesson.
VOLUME PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will solve four problems where they have to find the volume of rectangular prisms. Each problem includes a diagram that the students can use to help them solve the problems.
APPLYING VOLUME IN THE REAL WORLD HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to measure different items in their home (a bed, a box of tissues, a food item, a board game, a television, and a pan). They will label each picture of the objects with their measurements. Finally, they will fine the volume of space each object occupies, rounding to the nearest tenth.

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
