Lesson Objectives and Overview: Addition with Arrays uses the concept of arrays to show repeated addition. The lesson defines arrays, including horizontal and vertical. It also presents illustrations, which show both how a correct array appears and groups that are not arrays. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to find the total number of objects in an array using repeated addition. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.

One optional addition to this lesson is to create another activity where students match cards with arrays on them to cards with repeated addition statements. Addition with Arrays
The Addition with Arrays lesson plan includes two pages of content. The lesson begins by explaining that an array is an arrangement of objects, pictures, or numbers in rows and columns. Rows are horizontal and columns are vertical. For example, seats in a theater are in rows, while we see columns in front of a house.
We can use arrays to organize objects into rows and columns. The rows and columns in an array have to have equal numbers. The lesson shows a few correct examples of arrays and a few incorrect examples of arrays.
We can use arrays to show repeated addition. For example, if someone is making dog treats, they might arrange them as an array on their cookie sheet. In this example, they have three rows and seven columns of treats. The repeated addition sentence for this array is 7 + 7 + 7. It uses the number of columns (7) and repeats it by the number of rows (3).
The lesson then includes two more examples. One of these example shows an array with five rows and six columns. The repeated addition sentence for this array would be 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6. The other example has three rows and four columns. That repeated addition sentence would be 4 + 4 + 4.

STICKER ARRAYS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students use small sheets of stickers to create arrays on paper using the stickers with different numbers of rows and columns. The students then hold up their arrays for the teacher to check. The teacher will determine which arrays the students will create. Students can also write repeated addition sentences next to the arrays.
ADDITION SENTENCES PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will write addition sentences for different arrays.
ADDITION WITH ARRAYS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to look at arrays and answer questions about them. For each array, they will determine how many rows and columns are shown. They will also write a repeated addition sentence for each array.
QUIZ
This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test your students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will draw arrays for two repeated addition equations.
