Our Addition Patterns lesson plan teaches students addition patterns as a way to mentally solve addition problems with large numbers. Students practice recognizing addition patterns and solve example problems as a part of this lesson.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have your students use a spinner for the lesson activity where they write their own numbers to increase the difficulty.

Description

What our Addition Patterns lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Addition Patterns presents addition patterns as a way to mentally solve addition problems with large numbers. The lesson specifically focuses on problems with addends that have the same number of zeros in each number and provides several examples to assist with students’ understanding. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize an addition pattern in relation to place value. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies needed for this lesson are spinner brads, scissors, and the handouts. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can copy the materials and make spinners.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. All of the optional adjustments for this lesson are for the activity. The first is to have your students use a spinner where they write their own numbers to increase the difficulty. Students could also use a random digit generator or a fidget spinner to generate the numbers. Finally, you could include a third or fourth digit for more advanced students.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ADDITION PATTERNS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Addition Patterns

The Addition Patterns lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson begins by noting that addition has lots of patterns. It’s easy to quickly add smaller numbers together in your head, but larger numbers can be more difficult. We can use patterns to solve some addition problems quickly. For example, if you know how to solve 2 + 3 in your head, you can also solve 20 + 30 and 200 + 300 by following the pattern.

The only difference between the three problems above is the number of zeroes in the addends (a number that is added to another number). The lesson includes a helpful illustration of this concept. 2 + 3 = 5, 20 + 30 = 50, and 200 + 300 = 500. The zeroes form a pattern: the addends and the sums have the same number of zeroes.

The lesson shows another example of this with the problem 3 + 6 = 9. Following the pattern, 30 + 60 = 90, 300 + 600 = 900, and 3000 + 6000 = 9000. We can also write these patterns using words. 3 ones + 6 ones = 9 ones, 3 tens + 6 tens = 9 tens, and so on. This pattern also works for multi-digit numbers: 8 + 5 = 13, 80 + 50 = 150, and so on.

ADDITION PATTERNS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Addition Patterns lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

SPINNER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to spin the provided spinner two times to fill in the table on the worksheet. They will then write the sentences they create as math expressions. The worksheet provides an example for students to reference as they complete the activity.

COMPLETE THE PATTERNS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to complete the provided patterns.

ADDITION PATTERNS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will fill in the provided chart. For the chart, they will add one more zero to the number for each line and name the place value.

QUIZ

This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. The quiz asks them to look at two number patterns and identify the next addition sentence in each pattern.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
