Lesson Objectives and Overview: Adding 3 or More Integers teaches students how to add three or more integers at once. The lesson includes two different methods that students can use to solve these problems. This lesson is for students in 6th grade.
Classroom Procedure

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have students use a random digit generator to find three integers to add together. You can also make sure to help students understand that adding a negative is basically another way to subtract. If you have more advanced students, you can increase the number of digits. Finally, you could have students create their own problems and solve them on their own or exchange them with a partner to solve.

Adding 3 or More Integers
The Adding 3 or More Integers lesson plan includes two pages of content. The lesson begins by asking students if they have ever added more than two numbers together, maybe when adding up their scores in a video game or the money they made from doing chores. The most important part of adding integers together is knowing whether they are positive or negative. We have two strategies that we can use to add more than two numbers together, both of which are covered in this lesson. You can use either strategy!
The lesson demonstrates both strategies using the problem -14 + 20 + (-3). The -3 is in parentheses, emphasizing the negative sign. However, not all problems will include the parentheses. Both ways of writing the equation are correct.
The first strategy is to add one number at a time. First, you add the first two numbers together. You then add the next number to the sum of the first two numbers. You continue doing this until you’ve added all of the numbers together.
The second strategy is to collect the positives and negatives. For this method, you find the sum of all of the positives and the sum of all of the negatives and then add those two numbers together. This strategy is useful when you need to add many numbers together.
The lesson ends with two more example problems. It shows you how to solve both problems using both methods.

PLAYING CARDS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will draw cards to create practice problems. Each card is worth its face value. If they draw a red card, the number is negative, and if they draw a black card, the number is positive. Jacks are worth 11, Queens are worth 12, Kings are worth 13, and Aces are worth 1. They will create problems using three cards, four cards, and five cards.
ADD THE INTEGERS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will add integers using either strategy. They must show their work.
ADDING 3 OR MORE INTEGERS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
The homework assignment asks students to solve problems using each strategy (one number at a time and collect positives and negatives). They will show their work for each problem and method.

This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. For this quiz, students will solve a problem using two different strategies: one number at a time and by collecting.positives and negatives.
