Add Within 100 has a detailed lesson plan with great visual examples that teach basic addition. I especially appreciate the links to other resources and videos to prep for the lesson.

With our Add Within 100 lesson plan, students learn helpful strategies to add both one and two digit numbers within 100. Students solve problems for practice.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. All of the suggested additions and adjustments are for the lesson activity. Students can flip over a second two digit number instead of rolling a die.

Description

What our Add Within 100 lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Add Within 100 teaches students strategies for adding two numbers less than 100. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add within 100 with two-digit and one- digit numbers including multiples of 10 using a strategy based on place value. This lesson is for students in 1st grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The only supplies you will need for this lesson are digit cards, die, and the worksheets. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the supplies and copy the worksheets.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. All of the suggested additions and adjustments are for the lesson activity. Students can flip over a second two digit number instead of rolling a die. Students can also work with a partner for the activity worksheet. If you have advanced students, you can also start incorporating more cards that represent higher place values.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. It notes that the lesson includes a hands-on activity that students can use for practice, either on their own or in pairs. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ADD WITHIN 100 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Add Within 100

The Add Within 100 lesson plan includes two pages of content. You can add numbers using place value by lining up the numbers matching their place value. For example, to add 13 + 5, you line up the 3 and the 5 because they are both in the ones place value. The easiest way to do this is to line the numbers up vertically. You start working from the smallest place value (ones) to the largest. For 13 + 5, you first add 3 + 5, which is 8. Next, you bring the 1 down. You can use a place value chart if you’d like. The lesson then includes several other helpful examples. In two of the examples, you have to regroup. The examples walk you through how to do this.

ADD WITHIN 100 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Add Within 100 lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

DIGIT CARDS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will cut out digit cards, each of which has one number on it. They will turn two cards over at a time to make a two digit number. They will then roll the die and add that number to their two digit number. As they add, they must show their work and circle their answer on a separate sheet of paper.

ADD THE NUMBERS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to solve problems where they have to add two numbers together.

ADD WITHIN 100 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will first solve problems where they have to add the two numbers together. They must also answer a few multiple choice questions.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
