With our Add/Subtract Money with Word Problems lesson plan, students learn how to solve word problems about money using addition and subtraction. Students practice solving these types of problems and practice writing their own.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have students write their own money word problems based on various items they’d like to purchase.

Description

What our Add/Subtract Money with Word Problems lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Add/Subtract Money with Word Problems teaches students strategies for using addition and subtraction to solve word problems about money. This lesson is for students in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are poster paper, markers, colored pencils, and the handouts. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the materials and copy the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have students practice using multiple numbers to add and subtract. You could also have students write their own money word problems based on various items they’d like to purchase. Students can also use fake money to purchase items in your classroom and write word problems about them.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ADD/SUBTRACT MONEY WITH WORD PROBLEMS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Add and Subtract Money with Word Problems

The Add/Subtract Money with Word Problems lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson begins by stating that you likely already use addition and subtraction to solve word problems with money in your day-to-day life. This can look like figuring out how much change you will get back when you buy something at a store (subtraction) or determining how much money you will need to spend to buy two of something (addition).

It’s much easier to solve word problems when you know and recognize some key words. These words help you determine if you should be using addition or subtraction to solve a problem. The lesson includes some example key words. Key words for addition include total, sum, both, all, add, altogether, plus, increase, and combine. Key words for subtraction include decrease, fewer, difference, less than, remains, minus, take away, left, and subtract. Some specific questions can be used to indicate whether you need to use addition or subtraction. For addition, these can be what is the total, how many altogether, how many in all, and more. For subtraction, these can be how many fewer, how much change, how many are left, and more.

Next, the lesson includes a few example problems. The first example includes the phrase What is the total? so we know that we need to use addition. The second example uses the phrase you have left, which means that we need to use subtraction. The lesson walks through both of these examples in detail and shows you how to find the correct answer.

ADD/SUBTRACT MONEY WITH WORD PROBLEMS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Add/Subtract Money with Word Problems lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

CREATE WORD PROBLEMS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will work in groups of two or three to complete this activity. Each group will draw a setting from the list on the worksheet and will create two addition and two subtraction problems using that setting. They should include the answers to their problems on a separate sheet of paper. Each group can either write their problems on a piece of paper or on a poster that can be displayed in the classroom.

SOLVE THE PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will solve four word problems that deal with money. They will circle the operation in each and will show their work.

ADD/SUBTRACT MONEY WITH WORD PROBLEMS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to write and solve four money word problems about their day. They will write two that require addition and two that require subtraction.

QUIZ

This lesson includes a quiz. You can use this to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For this quiz, students will solve two word problems, showing their work as they go.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
