Great learning materials.

I have not used them yet but just after reading over them, I can tell they're going to wonderful teaching material. There are so many great selections, I wish I could get more than 3 a month free. A good education for a child should always be free.

With our Add/Subtract Money lesson plan, students learn how to add and subtract the decimal form of money. Students also learn to identify the numerical value of various coins and paper money and add them together or subtract them.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to introduce a bank statement and have students practice adding and subtracting items from the sheet.

Description

What our Adding/Subtracting Money lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Adding/Subtracting Money teaches students how to add and subtract the decimal form of money. This lesson plan reinforces vocabulary and demonstrates how to convert money to a decimal form, and add and subtract the decimal amounts. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to convert money to a decimal form, and add and subtract the decimal amounts. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies that you will need include bags of coins for the activity.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students use preprinted cards of items that they must them add and subtract the value of. You could also introduce a bank statement and have students practice adding and subtracting items from the sheet. If you have more advanced students, you could have your students begin to add three numbers.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ADDING/SUBTRACTING MONEY LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Adding/Subtracting Money

The Adding/Subtracting Money lesson plan includes two pages of content. It’s important to learn how to add and subtract money. You might not even realize that when you add and subtract money, you’re doing a math problem. Maybe your parents give you an allowance and you want to add the amounts together to see how much you’ll have in a certain period of time. When you’re old enough to have a bank account, you’ll need to know how to add the money you earn and subtract the money you spend. The lesson shows different coins and bills with their values.

Addition

The lesson then shows students how to add two. different amounts together. They need to first find the sum of each side. The first side is a quarter and two dimes; the second is a dime and two pennies. When you add the first side together (25 + 10 + 10), you get 45 cents. When you add the second side together (10 + 1 + 1), you get 12 cents. Finally, you add the two together: 45 + 12 = 57 cents. You could also add all of the coins together at the same time: 25 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 = 57 cents.

You can add money together in many different ways, and can choose the way that works best for you. The lesson shows an example of another way to add or subtract money, using two amounts: $2.25 and $1.05. We can add or subtract these amounts by lining up the decimal points. When you’re working with money, there are always two places after the decimal point. It shows how to add and subtract these two amounts by lining the decimal points up.

ADDING/SUBTRACTING MONEY LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Adding/Subtracting Money lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

COINS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to reach into a bag of coins and pull out two amounts. They will then count the money and then add or subtract the values.

SOLVING PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will complete two short exercises. For the first, they will look at pictures of money and will find the amount and then add or subtract. And for the second, they will solve six addition and subtraction problems.

ADDING/SUBTRACTING MONEY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Like the practice worksheet, for the homework assignment, students will complete two short exercises. For the first, they will look at pictures of money and will find the amount and then add or subtract. And for the second, they will solve six addition and subtraction problems.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will solve two problems.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
