Description
What our Add Multiple 2-Digit Numbers lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Add Multiple 2-Digit Numbers provides students with strategies for adding multiple two-digit numbers. It instructs students to add by place value, first adding together the ones and then adding together the tens. It also offers the students the option of adding in groups of ten. Several examples are provided for the teacher to demonstrate for the students, and for the students to practice individually. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add multiple two-digit numbers. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are brads to create spinners, scissors, markers, and the handouts. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the supplies and copy the handouts.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have each of your students write a number on a card and then find three or four other students and add all of their numbers together. You could also have students write stories about real world examples of places where they could buy three or four things at different locations and add the value of all of the things together.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
ADD MULTIPLE 2-DIGIT NUMBERS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Add Multiple 2-Digit Numbers
The Add Multiple 2-Digit Numbers lesson plan includes two content pages. The lesson begins by stating that it’s important to be able to add multiple numbers together. For example, you might want to add prices while you’re shopping. If you buy three things—a $45 necklace, a $32 pair of shoes, and an $18 game—you might want to know how much money you’re spending in total. You can add multiple numbers together in two different ways.
The first way is to put the numbers in a column with the digits lined up. Add the ones column and then the tens column to find the total sum. In this example, you’ll add the 5 from 45, the 2 from 32, and the 8 from 18 first, for 15. You put the 5 underneath the ones column and put the 1 above the tens. Next, add the tens (4 from 45, 3 from 32, 1 from 18, and the extra 1) for a total of 9. The sum is 95.
The other way to add multiple 2-digit numbers together is to find groups of 10. Using the same example, we can separate the number into its tens and ones. First, add the tens place values (40 + 30 + 10) to get 80. Next, add the ones (5 + 2 + 8) for 15. Add 80 + 15 to get 95!
The lesson closes with multiple examples of both methods to reinforce these concepts.
ADD MULTIPLE 2-DIGIT NUMBERS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Foundations of Multiplication lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
SPINNER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will create a spinner using the materials provided to them by their teacher. They will fill in the spinner with different two-digit numbers. They’ll spin it three or four times and add all the numbers together, showing their work on the worksheet.
ADD MULTIPLE 2-DIGIT NUMBERS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to solve nine addition problems.
TOTAL SUM HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, parents will help students go online to find three or four items they’d like to purchase that cost under $100. They’ll print a picture of each thing out, cut them out, and glue them in the provided boxes on the worksheet. They’ll then add the cost of the items together to find the total sum.
QUIZ
This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test your students’ knowledge and understanding of the lesson material. Students will find the sum for three addition problems.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
