Add Fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as Denominators

$1.95

Adding fractions with denominators of 10, 100, and 1000 can be a tricky concept for students to grasp. This lesson plan will help them understand it using visual aids and hands-on activities. By the end of the lesson, your students will be able to add two fractions with different denominators.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to create decimal square cards that students can randomly draw from a deck and add together for practice.

Description

What our Add Fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as Denominators lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Add Fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as Denominators teaches students how to solve addition problems with different denominators. Students will complete practice problems as a part of this lesson. This lesson is for students in 5th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The only supplies you will need for this lesson are markers or colored pencils and the handouts. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the materials and copy the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson is to create decimal square cards that students can randomly draw from a deck and add together for practice. If you have more advanced students, you can have them add in larger multiples of ten (such as ten thousands). You can also hand out decimal cards to students and have them mix and match their fractions with one another to add with a partner.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ADD FRACTIONS WITH 10, 100, 1000 AS DENOMINATORS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Add Fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as Denominators

The Add Fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as Denominators lesson plan includes two pages of content. The lesson begins by reminding students that they’ve already learned that you have to have a common denominator in order to add fractions. When you add fractions, you need to refer to the same whole. The lesson walks students through an example. If you need to add fractions together that have denominators of 10, 100, or 1,000, making them have a common denominator is easy! All you have to do is multiply by a factor of 10.

The first step is to multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number, creating equivalent fractions. In the provided example, they use 100 as the common denominator, because it’s the larger number. You can also simply add a 0 to both numbers instead of multiplying. Now that you have equivalent fractions, you just need to add the numerators together!

The lesson then walks you through multiple other examples. One of the examples shows what to do when the numerator is larger than the denominator.

ADD FRACTIONS WITH 10, 100, 1000 AS DENOMINATORS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Add Fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as Denominators lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

DECIMAL SQUARES ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will draw the fraction that the teacher puts on the board and find the solution.

FRACTIONS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to first fill in the table with equivalent fractions. They will then convert fractions to the same denominator and add the fractions together.

ADD FRACTIONS WITH 10, 100, 1000 AS DENOMINATORS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to complete two short exercises. For the first, they will fill in the fraction table on the worksheet. For the second, they will convert fractions to the same denominator and then add.

QUIZ

This lesson includes a quiz that you can use to test your students’ understanding of the lesson material. The quiz asks students to answer questions related to the lesson and then solve an addition problem involving fractions.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
