Distinguishing Connotations and Denotations

$1.95

With our Distinguishing Connotations and Denotations lesson plan, students learn about the difference between denotation and connotation and how this can affect the meaning of a sentence or passage.

Description

Our Distinguishing Connotations and Denotations lesson plan teaches students the difference between denotation and connotation and how to choose words for their writing based on both. During this lesson, students are asked to work collaboratively with a partner to sort a list of words into connotation/denotation groups and then rank them from most to least positive; they then write sentences with some of the words. Students are also asked to look at sentences with blanks in them and choose the best of two words to fill in the blank; they then write a new sentence with the unused word.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish among connotations (associations) of words with similar denotations (literal definitions).
