Awesome lesson!

Alphabetical order can be tricky for some kids to learn but the lesson plan made it very easy to teach to my daughter. It also gave great discussion topics and ways to explain alphabetical order. The worksheets helped to reinforce the lesson very well.

The Alphabetical Order lesson plan teaches students the steps necessary for alphabetizing and how to apply these steps to place words in alphabetical order. Students will complete four different worksheets, one of which is a take-home homework assignment, as a part of this lesson to practice alphabetizing.

Included with this lesson are some optional additions to the lesson, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the worksheet. It suggests that you can add a third day to the lesson plan where students work on their own to complete additional alphabetizing exercises.

Description

What our Alphabetical Order lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Alphabetical Order teaches students the steps necessary for alphabetizing and how to apply these steps to place words in alphabetical order. At the end of the lesson, students will have learned the steps necessary for alphabetizing as well as how to apply these steps to place words in alphabetical order. This lesson is for students in kindergarten and 1st grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the orange box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. For this lesson, you will need the handouts, paper, various writing utensils, word lists, and copies of the activity pages. You can prepare for this lesson ahead of time by making copies of the handouts and preparing the visual aids. You can also find objects or images that students can use as practice for alphabetizing.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section. This lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. For this lesson, it suggests that you can add an additional third day to your lesson where students review the lesson material and complete assignments that demonstrate their understanding.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. It notes that alphabetizing is an essential skill for students to learn. It allows students to organize their own information as well as find the information that they need in an efficient manner. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

The Alphabetical Order lesson plan does not include any content pages. Rather, it provides a very detailed lesson plan, found on the two Classroom Procedure pages.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Alphabetical Order lesson plan includes four worksheets: two activity worksheets, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the first activity worksheet, students will look at the objects that you, the teacher, have placed at the front of the room. They will write down what these items are in the box on the worksheet. They will then put them in alphabetical order.

WORD BANK ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will fill in the blanks in a silly short story for this activity worksheet. They will use words from a word bank. In order for the story to make sense, they must insert the words into the story in alphabetical order.

ALPHABETIZE THE DESK PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to put a list of items found in a desk in alphabetical order.

ALPHABETIZING SCAVENGER HUNT HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Students will complete the homework assignment in two parts. For the first part, they will find objects at home that match specific descriptions. These descriptions include “Something that starts with the first letter of your first name” and “Something blue.” They will write what they found next to each description. For the second part, they will take the objects that they found for part one and put them in alphabetical order.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
