What our Adverbs (Grades 2-3) lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Adverbs for grades 2-3 strengthens reading comprehension and written expression as students accurately identify adverbs in a text and independently use accurate adverbs in writing. This lesson challenges students to act out sentences with adverbs, which stimulates their sensory system while developing their concept imagery for the application and significance of adverbs. Students also work collaboratively to identify adverbs in a story. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to accurately identify adverbs in text and will correctly and independently use adverbs in writing. This lesson is for students in 2nd grade and 3rd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the green box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson include the handouts, paper, writing utensils, and access to reading materials.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. The suggestions for this lesson provide a guide for which parts of the lesson you can administer on which of the three days scheduled for the lesson. For example, for day one, it suggests having students review verbs, nouns, and any other parts of speech they’ve learned already. They also suggest introducing, defining, and practicing with Anna Adverb.

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ADVERBS (GRADES 2-3) LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Adverbs (Grades 2-3) lesson plan includes four worksheets: two activity worksheets, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
CIRCLE THE ADVERBS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the first activity worksheet, students will read a short story about Emily and her brother Joey, circling the adverbs in each sentence.
WORD BANK ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the second activity worksheet, students will use the word bank of adverbs on the worksheet to create ten sentences, using at least one adverb per sentence.
ANNA ADVERB PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to read a paragraph about Anna Adverb. In the first five sentences, they will circle the adverbs. They will then write five new sentences about Anna having an adventure, using at least one adverb per sentence.
ADVERBS (GRADES 2-3) HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will first answer three questions about adverbs. Next, they will read a few paragraphs and underline all of the adverbs.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the first activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
