Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. The only suggested addition to this lesson is to show students the Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words Rap video to introduce the lesson.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

MEANING THROUGH WORDS AND PHRASES – GRADE 5 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Root Words

The Meaning Through Words and Phrases – Grade 5 lesson plan includes one interactive content page. This page includes a chart with three columns: Word, Latin or Greek Root, and Definition. The students will circle the Latin or Greek root in each word and then write the root and definition for each word in the blanks on the chart. They will finally choose a Latin or Greek root word from the list and write another word using that root.

MEANING THROUGH WORDS AND PHRASES – GRADE 5 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Meaning Through Words and Phrases – Grade 5 lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

PASSAGE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will first read the passage on the first page of the activity. They will then use context clues and phrases from the passage to write a definition for each of the bold words.

TWO PAGE PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet for this lesson is two pages. The first page asks students to read the provided passage and draw a line from the word to the correct definition, based on the context in the passage. The second page asks students to fill in the blanks in a story paragraph with the words from the first page. They will also answer a reading comprehension question about the paragraph.

MEANING THROUGH WORDS AND PHRASES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will read a passage and answer reading comprehension questions about it.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
