Lesson Objectives and Overview: Keywords for Word Problems teaches students strategies for recognizing important keywords in word problems. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify keywords in word problems. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.
Classroom Procedure

Keywords for Word Problems
The Keywords for Word Problems lesson plan includes two content pages. There are many different ways to solve word problems. No matter which method you choose, you can use specific words to figure out which operation to use to solve.
Some key words for addition include add, sum, total, all together, plus, and in all. For multiplication, some key words include multiply, product, times, twice, total, and multiplied by. Next, for subtraction, some key words include subtract, remain, difference, less than, fewer, how many more, and minus. Finally, some key words for division include divide, quotient, goes into, split equally, and each.
How to Solve a Word Problem
There’s a helpful four-step strategy for solving word problems. Step one is to read the problem. Step two is to circle the numbers. Step three is to underline the key words. Finally, step four is to solve the problems by either drawing a picture or writing a number sentence (or both!).
The lesson closes with a helpful example that walks through each of these steps. Students should read through this example to learn how to use these four easy steps to solve word problems.

CREATING WORD PROBLEMS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
Students will work with a partner to complete the activity worksheet. Each pair will create word problems based on a single setting, like with the practice worksheet. They will pick a keyword from each operation to use in their problems. Next, they will use the four-step method for showing how to solve their problems. They will also draw a picture and write a word sentence for each problem.

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
