Lesson Objectives and Overview: Decimals Expanded Form introduces students to writing decimals in expanded form. Expanded form is reviewed at the beginning of the lesson and an illustration is included showing the name of each place value. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to write decimals through the hundredths place in expanded and standard form. This lesson is for students in 5th grade.

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students use graph paper to write out each place value and expand using decimals. You could also have your students write each number on a place value chart to determine the value prior to writing the expanded form. Another fun idea is to have them create numbers and exchange them with a partner. Finally, you could have your students find numbers in magazines or online to expand.

Decimals in Expanded Form
The Decimals Expanded Form lesson plan includes two content pages. Expanded form is a way to write a number out to show the value of each digit using its place value. This is an addition expression. The position of a digit in a given number tells you what its value is. Each digit’s value is reflected on a place value chart.
The lesson gives several examples of how to expand a decimal. The first example is the number 648.37. To expand the decimal, we multiply the digit times the place value. The first digit is 6, and its place value is 100, so in expanded form it becomes 6 * 100. We do this with each digit. The final standard decimal form of 648.37 is 6 * 100 + 4 * 10 + 8 * 1 + 3 * 1 ⁄ 10 + 7 * 1 ⁄ 100.
The lesson goes over two more examples. For the number 391.04, we use the same method. The final standard decimal form is 3 * 100 + 9 * 10 + 1 * 1 + 0 * 1 ⁄ 10 + 4 * 1 ⁄ 100 or 3 * 100 + 9 * 10 + 1 * 1 + 4 * 1 ⁄ 100. We don’t need an addition expression for the value of zero, but can include it if we want to.

The Decimals Expanded Form lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
FIND SOMEONE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
The activity worksheet asks students to find another person in their class to expand each decimal on the worksheet and sign their paper, only using each person once. They will double-check each answer for accuracy.
EXPANDED AND STANDARD PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, students will first rewrite each number in expanded form. Next, they will rewrite each number in standard form.
DECIMALS EXPANDED FORM HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Like the practice worksheet, for the homework assignment, students will first rewrite each number in expanded form. Next, they will rewrite each number in standard form.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will rewrite a number in expanded form and a number in standard form.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
