Description
What our Understanding Addition/Subtraction lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Understanding Addition/Subtraction lesson plan helps young students understand addition and subtraction emphasizing the place value. The lesson uses pictures and drawings to help students use addition and subtraction. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add and subtract two-digit and one-digit numbers. This lesson is for students in 1st grade and 2nd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The only supplies you will need for this lesson are bags of bottle caps. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can copy the handouts and write both one and two digit numbers on the bottle caps.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have students use a deck of cards to draw numbers or roll a dice to find both the tens and ones place and then complete problems using those numbers. You can also have students write a one or two digit number on a card and then work with a partner to either add or subtract their numbers. Finally, if you have more advanced students in your class, you can allow them to line problems up by place value and skip drawing.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
UNDERSTANDING ADDITION/SUBTRACTION LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Understanding Addition
The Understanding Addition/Subtraction lesson plan includes two pages of content. The lesson begins by teaching students about addition. Students will learn that two-digit numbers have a digit in the tens place and a digit in the ones place. For example, the number 32 has a 3 in the tens place and a 2 in the ones place.
The lesson provides the example of the problem 32 +15. These problems can be solved with the help of a place value chart. 32 is 3 tens and 2 ones, which we can represent with three long blue rectangles and two blue circles. 15 has 1 ten and 5 ones, which we can represent with one green rectangle and five green circles. These drawings can help students visualize addition. The next step is to count how many rectangles and how many circles there are in total. There are four rectangles (tens) and seven circles (ones). Therefore, the answer is 47.
We can write addition problems either horizontally or vertically. The lesson shows both of these options.
Understanding Subtraction
Next, students will learn about subtraction. The lesson uses the example problem 54 – 21 using a place value chart. 54 is 5 tens and 4 ones, which we can represent with five long rectangles and four circles. 21 has 2 ten and 1 one. We will take away two rectangles (tens) and one circle (ones). We can then count what’s left over. There are three rectangles and three circles left, which is equal to 33.
For both addition and subtraction problems, you should line up the place values (line up the tens and the ones). If you don’t, you won’t be adding or subtracting correctly. Place values must always match!
UNDERSTANDING ADDITION/SUBTRACTION LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Understanding Addition/Subtraction lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
BOTTLE CAPS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
Students can work either on their own or in pairs to complete the activity worksheet. They will draw two bottle caps out of the bag provided to them and add them together using a place value chart.
SOLVE THE PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to solve six problems using a place value chart, three of which are addition problems and three of which are subtraction problems.
UNDERSTANDING ADDITION/SUBTRACTION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will solve 12 practice problems, half of which are addition problems and half of which are subtraction problems.
QUIZ
This lesson includes a quiz. You can use this to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For this quiz, students will solve two problems, one addition problem and one subtraction problem.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
