Description
What our Fractions on a Number Line 1 lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Fractions on a Number Line 1 teaches students how to represent a fraction on a number line diagram and recognize the parts of a fraction. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to represent a fraction on a number line diagram and recognize parts of the fraction. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson include scissors, glue, and paper.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your students draw fractions on number lines with the whole class. If you have more advanced students, you can have them place two fractions on a single line and find the difference in the distance between the two. You can also use hands on manipulatives to show students where a fraction is on a number line. Finally, you could show a video to demonstrate and reinforce the concepts taught in the lesson.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE 1 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Fractions on a Number Line
The Fractions on a Number Line 1 lesson plan includes two content pages. Fractions are a part of a whole. Fractions have two parts: the numerator, the number on top, and the denominator, the number on the bottom. When placing a fraction on a number line, the numerator and denominator determine both how to draw the number line and where to put the fraction on the number line.
The lesson shows an example number line, which starts at 0 and ends at 1 (like all fraction number lines). The fraction, 2/3, belongs somewhere between the 0 and 1, which is also called an interval. Number lines must be split into equal parts before a fraction is placed on it. The denominator determines how many parts the number line needs to have. Because the fraction is 2/3, the number line needs 3 parts.
Next, the lines are labeled with the fractions 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3. The whole number has the same value for both the numerator and denominator, 3/3. The numerator determines the piece of the number line to find. For the fraction 2/3, the numerator is 2, so the correct line is the second line, which represents 2/3.
Always remember that the denominator tells how many equal parts to break our line into and the numerator tells specifically which part to identify.
The lesson walks through a few more examples, following the same steps. To determine what a specific fraction is on an unlabeled number line, the first step is to count the hash marks starting at 0. This is the denominator. Next, count the hash mark of the indicated fraction. This is the numerator. It’s that easy!
It’s important to learn how to find fractions on a number line, because fractions are used every single day, from recipes to engineering.
FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE 1 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Fractions on a Number Line 1 lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
MATCHING ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will cut out and match each number line on the worksheet with the correct fraction, gluing them onto a separate sheet of paper.
NUMBER LINES PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to analyze different number lines and answer questions about them.
FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
For the homework assignment, students will draw and label different fractions on the number lines printed on the worksheet.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will draw a number line and mark the fraction listed on the worksheet.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
