Description
Our Relating to Length lesson plan introduces students to the strategies they can use when solving word problems related to length. Problems are limited to addition and subtraction within 100 and include the use of pictures or drawings and simple equations with a symbol representing the missing number. Students are asked to work collaboratively, with a partner, to complete an activity in which use objects in the classroom to create word problems, passing them onto another group to solve and solving a different group’s problems in turn. Students are also asked to individually complete practice problems in order to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units; use drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number.
