In our Formal vs. Informal Writing lesson plan, students learn the differences between formal and informal writing and what each is used for. Students also practice using both formal and informal writing.

Description

Our Formal vs. Informal Writing lesson plan introduces students to the characteristics of formal and informal writing, the appropriateness of each, and their differences. Students brainstorm, as a group, what they think the characteristics of formal and informal writing are; they are then asked to write both a formal and informal paragraph with a partner, utilizing both their collaborative and creative writing skills during the process. Students are also asked to independently complete a number of activities to test their understanding.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish the difference between formal and informal writing, list characteristics of each, and use formal and informal writing.
