You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Teacher Notes
The paragraph on this page provides a little more information or guidance on what to expect from the lesson. It explains that you can teach this lesson in a whole-class setting or as an independent, small-group activity. You can use the blank lines to record any thoughts or ideas you have as you prepare.
EARTH DAY LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
The Earth Day lesson plan contains three content pages. Earth Day is a special day celebrated every year on April 22. It’s a time when people worldwide come together to show their love and care for our planet, Earth. This day reminds us of how important it is to protect and take care of our environment. On Earth Day, everyone engages in environmental education and eco-friendly activities.
History and Celebration
The History of Earth Day
Earth Day began in 1970 when millions gathered to protest against pollution and raise awareness about environmental issues. Since then, it has grown into a global event with activities that promote recycling, planting trees, and cleaning up our neighborhoods. People realize that we all share this planet, and it’s our responsibility to keep it healthy for everyone.
Why Earth Day Matters
Earth Day is important because it teaches us how we can make a positive impact on our planet. Learning about things like recycling, saving water, and reducing waste can help keep Earth healthy for many generations. It’s like a birthday for Earth, reminding us to take care of the place we call home.
How We Can Celebrate
There are many ways we can celebrate Earth Day. We can plant trees or flowers to help clean the air. We can also pick up trash in our communities or start a recycling program at home or school. Even turning off lights when we don’t need them helps save energy! Every little action we take can make a big difference for our planet.
Interesting Facts
Animals and Nature
Earth Day is also a time to think about animals and nature. Many animals depend on clean water and forests to survive. By protecting their habitats and keeping our environment clean, we can help animals thrive. Earth is not just our home but also the home of millions of plants and animals that need our help.
Fun Facts About Earth
Did you know that Earth is the only planet known to have life? It has deserts, oceans, mountains, and forests. These are the homes of all different kinds of flora and fauna, which are fancy names for plants and animals. Earth is like a big, beautiful home for all of us! It’s full of amazing landscapes and natural wonders we should cherish and protect.
What to Do for Earth
Global Efforts

Taking Action
On Earth Day, we can take action by learning more about the environment and how we can make a difference. Whether using less plastic, planting a garden, or learning about endangered animals, every small action makes a significant impact. It’s about learning new ways to help our planet and sharing those ideas with others.
Learning and Growing Together
Earth Day isn’t just about one day of the year. We can learn from each other and share ideas to make our communities cleaner and greener places to live. It’s a chance to unite as a global community and work toward a healthier planet for everyone.
A Promise for the Future
By celebrating Earth Day, we promise to take care of our planet. When we work together and take small steps to protect Earth, we ensure that it will be a healthy and happy place for everyone, now and in the future. We promise future generations that we will do our best to leave them a beautiful planet to enjoy.
EARTH DAY LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Earth Day lesson plan includes two worksheets: an activity worksheet and a practice worksheet. Each one will help students solidify their grasp of the material they learned throughout the lesson. You can refer to the classroom procedure guidelines to know when to hand out each worksheet.
EARTH DAY POSTER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For this activity, students will listen to a speaker you invite to class. Based on what they learn from the speaker’s presentation, students will create a poster that answers the questions on the worksheet page. You can showcase their finished posters in the classroom or hallway.
REVIEW PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet requires students to answer a series of 11 questions. These questions all relate to the content pages, so students will need to refer to them often for the answers. In addition, each question provides which reading tool the question corresponds to, such as text feature, vocabulary, or comprehension.
Worksheet Answer Keys
At the end of the lesson plan document is an answer key for the practice worksheet. The correct answers are all in red to make it easier for you to compare them with students’ responses. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
