Irregular Verbs

These worksheets were exactly what I was looking for. They provided an example of irregular verbs as well as activities to check the students' knowledge and understanding.

Clarendon Learning

Clarendon Learning resources are excellent! They come with additional resources (however I found one or two links did not work out of about 4-5 links),additional worksheets and links to YouTube videos. The lesson plan was well put together and has helped me with my virtual speech therapy lessons. Overall I would highly recommend. I will likely use this resource over TpT in the future.

Awesome

Thanks for the awesome work book. But I want you to be careful before you upload the lesson book. I see so many grammar errors and no spaces from the book. Except that problem, that would be awesome. Thanks again. Not this book, but other books.

With our Irregular Verbs lesson plan, students learn about verbs that have irregular spellings in the past tense. Students are given common examples of these and practice writing sentences using these irregular verbs.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to add a memory card game or Go Fish game to the lesson for more practice.

Description

What our Irregular Verbs lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Irregular Verbs introduces students to the concept of irregular verbs. While there are several hundred irregular verbs, this lesson familiarizes students with about 50 of the most common of these verbs. Without shortcuts or rules to help students with irregular verbs, the goal of this lesson is to make practice and memorization fun in the most creative ways possible. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the orange box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you will need for this lesson are scissors, glue, colored pencils or markers, and markers for the bingo game activity.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to add a verbal listening and writing assignment. You can also add a memory card game or Go Fish game. Finally, if you want more practice materials for your students, you can find several worksheets in the links provided with the lesson.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. It notes that this is just an introduction to this subject and that it’s important for students to memorize the given irregular verbs, since there are no rules for them. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

IRREGULAR VERBS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Irregular Verbs

The Irregular Verbs lesson plan includes two content pages. To make regular verbs past tense, you add either a -d or -ed. For example, bake becomes baked and look becomes looked.

Verbs that don’t form their past tense by adding a -d or -ed are irregular verbs. Some of them change tense by changing vowels in the middle (come and came, give and gave). Some change the letters at the end of the word (sleep and slept, hear and heard). Other times, the whole word changes (go and went, eat and ate). Finally, sometimes, nothing changes (cut and cut, put and put). You can’t learn a strict set of rules for irregular verbs.

Irregular Verb Chart

The lesson closes with a helpful irregular verb chart that lists 35 examples of irregular verbs.

IRREGULAR VERBS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Irregular Verbs lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

BINGO ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to choose pictures from the provided bingo board squares sheet, cut them out, and glue them onto the blank bingo board given to them by their teacher. They will then color and decorate their sheet. They will then get bingo dots and play bingo with their class!

COMPLETE THE STORY PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will first complete the given story by filling in the blanks with the past tense of the irregular verb given. They will then draw a line between each of the listed irregular verbs and their past tense form.

IRREGULAR VERBS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to write five sentences about a trip they’ve been on using one of the given verbs in its past tense. They will also draw a picture to illustrate their story.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
