Description

What our Counting to 120 lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Counting to 120 teaches students how to count to 120, using interactive activities and lots of practice to solidify their understanding. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to count from 1 to 120. Students will be able to begin counting forwards and backwards from a designated number. Students will understand changing the position of the digit will change the quantity of the number. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to give your students numbered cards and have them help create a number chart in your classroom. You can also let students use manipulatives to help them begin to count. For an additional activity, you could have your students pull out a handful of an item such as pennies and count them. Finally, you could try creating number magnets for the board and demonstrate how each digit changes the value when the place is changed.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

COUNTING TO 120 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Counting to 120

The Counting to 120 lesson plan includes one page of content. When you count to 120, you should start by visualizing each number. Visualizing the numbers on a board, while also hearing the number, will allow you to use both your visual and auditory learning skills to connect to the number system.

The position of the digits in a number changes the value, or quantity, of the number. Therefore, it’s very important to pay attention to the order of the digits. For example, if we have the digits 4 and 7, we can create both 47 and 74. These numbers have the same digits, but they have a different quantity because they are in a different order.

You can use a board with numbers from one to 120 to locate numbers. This helps you understand numeracy. To practice your counting skills, you can answer questions like: Do you know what number comes after 27? or Can you start counting at 112?

COUNTING TO 120 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Counting to 120 lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

ANIMALS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to look at a number board with numbers from 1 to 120. Some of the numbers on the number board have been replaced by animals. Students will figure out which number each animal stole!

COUNTING TO 120 PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will first fill in the missing numbers in the number chart. They will then draw a set of circles that matches the number on the worksheet. Finally, they will count how many pieces of pizza are shown in the box on the worksheet.

LOWEST TO HIGHEST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to cut out the numbers on the worksheet and place them in order from lowest to highest. They will double check their work by reading their number line out loud to an adult.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will fill in the missing numbers in three sets of numbers. They will then count how many guitars are shown in the box on the worksheet.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes an answer key for the practice worksheet. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
