At the end of the lesson, students will understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b. Students will also be able to use visuals to display multiples of fractions. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.

Options for Lesson

One optional adjustment to the lesson is to let your students use a dry erase board to write on their fraction number lines. You could have students color sections with map colors for each problem. You could also have your students draw their own number lines and work with a partner to write the math sentence. Finally, you could have students draw shapes and color them in to practice creating and using visual models.

Fractions as Multiples
The Multiplying Fractions Using A Number Line or Graphic lesson plan includes three content pages. It starts by explaining that multiplication is repeated addition. For example, we can simplify 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 to 3 times 4 (3 x 4). Using math language, we would say we’re finding the product of 3 and 4. However, sometimes we need to multiply using fractions instead of whole numbers. There are two main models that you can use to explore this concept.
Using a Number Line to Solve Multiplication Equations
First, you can use a number line. The first example shows a number line separated into fourths, where each section represents one fourth of the whole (1/4). If you’re looking at two sections, the multiplication sentence is 2 x 1/4.
The next example number line is broken in sixths, where each section represents one sixth of the whole (1/6). If you’re looking at four sections, the multiplication sentence is 4 x 1/6.
The lesson then asks students to try solving one on their own using a number line broken into sixths. They need to represent the multiplication sentence 3 x 1/6 on the number line.
This section includes one final example using a number line broken into eighths. If you’re looking at 7 sections, the multiplication sentence is 7 x 1/8.
Using a Graphic to Solve Multiplication Problems
Next, students will learn to use a graphic to solve multiplication problems. Each shape in the example has the same fractional amount shaded. When writing a multiplication sentence using graphics to represent fractions, you first need to answer two questions: How many times does the shape repeat? and What is the amount shaded in each shape?
The first example shows a shape that repeats 6 times and where each section represents 1/4. The multiplication sentence for this problem is 6 x 1/4.
Next, another example shows a shape that repeats 3 times and where each section represents 1/5. The multiplication sentence for this problem is 3 x 1/5.
Finally, a last example shows a shape that repeats 7 times and where each section represents 1/2. The multiplication sentence for this problem is 7 x 1/2.
The lesson closes by asking students to solve one on their own. They must use circles or squares to draw a graphic representation of the multiplication sentence 3 x 1/2.
