Overview: The Math Learning Roadmap Grade 6 lesson guide introduces students to more advanced material that further builds on the basics. Students will study percentages in greater detail, as well as ratios and proportions. They will learn how to solve more complicated expressions and explore new concepts, such as ordered pairs and coordinate planes.
Learn Bright learning roadmaps are useful tools for organizing your teaching agenda, whether in the classroom or at home. The roadmaps schedule suggested lessons for each subject by grade level. The roadmaps divide the lessons into four quarters, each of which further divides into three periods of three to four weeks. Each period contains a number of lesson plans to teach that focus on even more specific areas within the subject.
You will be able to incorporate every period’s lessons from each subject’s grade-level roadmap. During the first three weeks, for instance, you will deliver the lesson plans in the first column of each subject. Roadmaps are meant to make it easy for you to follow a schedule from which to teach throughout the year. Some roadmaps contain additional lesson plans that you might choose to use if you have extra time or want extra practice. You do not have to follow them exactly. Feel free to be flexible and adjust when necessary to fit your unique needs!
Math Learning Roadmap Grade 6
The grade 6 roadmap for math advances students’ knowledge about all the concepts they have been learning through the elementary grades. Students will study a few new concepts as well, such as the Pythagorean theorem and a number of graph types.
Quarter 1
For the first quarter, students will primarily review fractions, percentages, and ratios. Lessons include Factor Using the Distributive Property, Percentages – Find the Whole, and Scale Drawing.
Quarter 2
The second quarter goes through expressions and variables in more detail and spends time on inequalities. Students will learn the difference between an expression and an equation. Lessons include Identify Terms and Coefficients, Parts of Algebraic Expressions, and Evaluate Variable Expressions with Rational Numbers.
Quarter 3
In the third quarter, students will focus on areas of geometry, area and volume, and statistics and graphs. Lessons include Solid Figures and Cubic Units, Applying Volume in the Real World, and Data Collection and Distribution.
Quarter 4
The final quarter spotlights graphing coordinates on planes, rational numbers, and integers. Students will learn to apply what they already know to rational numbers. Lessons from this quarter include Using Absolute Value, Rations Numbers in Real-World Context, and Integers (Add & Subtract).
There is an extra page on this roadmap that contains several extra lesson plans. You can use these plans throughout the year as you have extra time or see the need for extra practice.
